La Casa

Casa do Grilo is an old farm building beautifully located in the valley of Xestoso de O Reguero, close to the village Monfero in Galicia. Nearby, just 10 minutes away by car, lies Fragas del Eume. With a size of approximately 90 Km˛, it is one of the largest nature reserves of Spain. Due to its richness in species it is also considered to be one of the most important ones.
Casa do Grilo is located just about 55 Km away from A Coruña and Santiago de Compostela. The completely restored group of bulidings, consisting of 5 individual holiday homes, dates back to the 19th century. While transforming the building to comfortable holiday homes, it was extremely well looked after maintaining its rustic and authentic charme on one hand, and on the other hand add modern comfort to its accomodations. The charming setting is a perfect place to sit back, relax and watch the world go by.

Environment

The nearby nature reserve Fragas do Eume is one of the best-preserved riverside Atlantic forests in Europe. Fewer than 500 people live within its 9,000 hectares, which gives an idea of the untouched state of these lush forests that follow the course of the River Eume. The park is shaped like a triangle whose corners and borders would be Pontes, Pontedeume and Monfero.
Well worth seeing is the Monastery of Monfero, which is one of the best examples of monastic life in Galicia. It was founded by benedictine monks in  1135, and was later transferred to the Cistercian Order. The vast extension of territory under their control, from Ortigueira to Betanzos, shows their socio-economical, political and cultural power. If you like to find out more about the region and its people we recomend to visit Monfero´s fiestas. Take a look at: Monfero / Fiestas.

Recreation

There are numerous routes at Fragas del Eume to be descovered on foot or by bike. It is very popular to visit our region during autum, when the park changes its colors to countless tones of red, yellow and ochre, resembling amazing fireworks.
Along the river Eume are various companies dedicating their activities to explore this magical environment by canoe or horse.

You might as well spent a day visiting the seaside and its villages, enjoying fresh seafood in cosy restaurants or just spent the day on the beach. At only 30 minutes by car you reach the small town Betanzos.
